Raising Food for Food Banks

Pumpkins and potato harvest
Each week the crew tends the garden and harvests the produce, which is then donated to a food bank in Oakland, often delivered there by Sheila McCormick. This year we estimate that the donations totaled more than 4000 lbs. of produce, and that does not include the pumpkins. Over the years we have gotten better at managing the crops to keep the field in production all year. We plant cool season crops in the spring, warm season plants in the summer (corn, green beans, lettuce, tomatoes, swiss chard, potatoes, cucumbers, pumpkins, and nearly limitless zucchini), more cool season crops in the fall, and some overwintering crops. Right now the garden has broccoli, cauliflower, kale and cabbage, harvested when it is not too muddy!
